Agile HMI Development
Effective and efficient development of interaction concepts
The automotive industry faces several challenges with regard to driver-vehicle interaction. As of today, the interaction between driver and vehicle is fairly complex due to the vast amount of different functions. With electrified, assisted and automated functions, vehicles are becoming increasingly complex and hard to operate for the everyday driver, despite the growing demand for ease of use. Furthermore, innovative and numerous vehicle systems aggravate the development complexity, whilst the required development speed in order to maintain ahead of the general market and to cope with customer’s expectations is very high. Overall, the development environment is more challenging and complex than ever. Therefore, revising whether currently applied development approaches can meet future requirements is advisable.
ika devises a new approach towards HMI development, targeting the facilitation of creating innovative interaction concepts in an efficient and effective manner. This is done with a highly iterative approach, utilizing a core strength of the ika: it’s large pool of highly skilled employees with different fields of specialisation, covering the complete vehicle. Whilst a small group of people remain constant during the complete development process as a “core team”, additional staff comes into play according to the specific requirements at different stages of development whenever needed. With such an interdisciplinary approach, different points of view, experience and ideas are combined from the very beginning. Another key element of this approach is to actively include the system’s end-user at different stages throughout the development process. This inclusion ranges from initial market screening, to user observations and interviews at beginning of development as well as extensive user studies with high fidelity prototypes towards the end of the development. Despite focussing on creating new interaction concepts with a user centred perspective, ika’s development approach provides a framework to consider other influencing factors to the final product design, such as legislative requirements or potential business models. This holistic approach may help to increase overall concept/product success on a sustained basis.
