CNG-Downsizing

New downsizing drive train concept in an optimized vehicle for reduction of CO₂-emissions down to 69 g/km

As a main target of this project, an energy efficient vehicle of the supermini class has been equipped with a CNG-powered two-cylinder-downsizing engine, developed by Meta. In combination with a piston based charger and active torsional vibration damping system, the central issues of small engines, namely the insufficient low-end torque and increased vibrations have been addressed and compensated. The integration of a belt-driven starter-alternator gives the possibility of realizing an acoustic enhanced stop-start function. The vehicle, in combination with other measures reducing driving resistances, offers consumption reduction in the NEDC of about 20 % and keeps level of performance and comfort compared to the basis vehicle by comprehensive NVH measures.[Foto: Downsizing-Project]
