6GEM+
Value-Oriented 6G Communication Systems for the Connected Digital Industry
As one of four national 6G transfer hubs, 6GEM+ builds seamlessly on the research of the preceding 6GEM research hub. Coordinated by RWTH Aachen University, the 6GEM+ consortium conducts research on future 6G mobile communication technologies with a strong focus on transferring research results into industry-oriented applications. The German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) assigns the 6G transfer hubs a key role in the national 6G research roadmap and is funding the project with approximately €25 million. In addition to RWTH Aachen University, the consortium includes Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund, and two Fraunhofer Institutes: for Production Technology (IPT) for Material Flow and Logistics (IML).
6GEM+ aims to transfer fundamental 6G research into practical application through validation in laboratory experiments and in four application-specific testbeds. This transfer of research is supported by close collaboration with associated industry partners, who contribute their requirements and practically relevant use cases as use-case mentors. The four innovative testbeds provide ideal environments for validating 6G technologies and cover four diverse verticals: mobility, intralogistics, production, and rescue robotics.
The Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) plays a key role in 6GEM+ by coordinating the mobility testbed. Within this testbed, ika provides extensive infrastructure, ranging from its own automated and connected research vehicle karl., to roadside infrastructure, and connected test tracks at ika and at the Aldenhoven Testing Center. In addition to testing technologies developed by the project partners in the testbed, ika is also researching three specific application scenarios: the offloading of automated driving functions to the cloud, the immersive teleoperation of automated vehicles, and the creation of a live digital twin of traffic.
