Alternative and Electrified Vehicle Propulsion Systems

The lecture covers various concepts of alternative and electrified vehicle propulsion systems. Firstly, the general conditions and influences on the development of new propulsion systems are analysed. The different structures of alternative propulsion systems as well as their energy converters ( i.e. hydraulic machines, fuel cells and electric motors) and energy storage systems (i.e. hydrogen storage, supercapacitors and batteries) will be presented. The thermal management of alternative powertrains and various operating strategies for increasing overall efficiency are also addressed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify requirements for alternative propulsion systems and compare the different types of powertrains.
  • Students possess in-depth knowledge of the structures and components of alternative and electrified single and hybrid drives.
  • Students will be able to compare and evaluate different energy sources and energy conversion chains for mobility applications.
  • Students will be able to design thermal management systems and operating strategies for alternative propulsion systems.
